Artist Statement
I am a 4th generation ceramics and multidisciplinary artist, pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics at the University of Maine Presque Isle, an endeavor that has been profoundly redefining my life from my previous service as a retired U.S. Army officer disabled veteran. My work is primarily utilitarian but I am exploring work with deeper content. I draw inspiration from the expressive freedom of the American Art Pottery period (1800s-early 1900s), particularly the spirit of potters like George Ohr and I have deep admiration and respect for Native American Art.
My process is mostly intuitive. I like to approach the clay on the wheel or table without much of a plan and just work, letting the piece come about freely as if the clay guides the process. I am fascinated by the ancient, enduring transformation of clay, from raw earthen material, through my hands, to a finished piece that could last millennia. My fulfillment as an artist simply lies in seeing my pots, a favorite mug or bowl integrated into the daily rituals of others, celebrating the beauty and utility of the handmade object.
